Head and neck cancers are among the most complex cancers to diagnose and treat because of their proximity to vital structures like the airway, voice box, nerves, and major blood vessels. An accurate assessment at the very beginning is crucial to planning the right treatment. This is where PET-CT (Positron Emission Tomography–Computed Tomography) has transformed the way we understand and manage these cancers.
PET-CT is an advanced imaging technology that combines functional imaging (PET) with structural imaging (CT). The patient is injected with a small amount of a radioactive glucose tracer. Since cancer cells are highly active and consume more glucose, they “light up” on the scan. When this metabolic map is fused with CT images, doctors can see both the activity of cancer and its exact location.

PET-CT can detect recurrences much earlier than conventional scans, improving chances of timely intervention.
